A unique individual to say the least, Ash broke into wrestling on the East Coast independent scene, mostly wrestling in the Tri-State area. His first gimmick was that of Marshal Van Black, a cocky loud mouth heel, Ash, being a natural fan favorite, struggled with the gimmick and repackaged himself as the mysterious masked Super Lemming, a crazy, suicidal luchadore who took some of the most insane bumps, before long he lost the gimmick in favor of just being himself and started to wear strange and bizarre attire to the ring all to the delight of the fans. Eventually Ash was signed by Real American Wrestling and feuded with Brad Phoenix, a Mid-West wrestler who had the same unique style and personality in his ring work, the feud was cut short as both men became best friends and formed a fan adored tag team that took them to three Tag Title reigns before they were signed up to the AWL.
